In response to this growing and preventable danger, 39 states in the US, as well as the District of Columbia (DC), the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam have banned texting while driving, with 10 of these states, DC, the Virgin Islands and Guam prohibiting all handheld cell phone use while driving.
Shockingly, densely-populated Florida has NO lawsbanning texting while driving. In fact, former governor Jeb Bush exercised Florida’s “Preemption Law” to prohibit local counties from enacting distracted driving bans. Numerous attempts by state legislators to prohibit texting while driving have failed, despite the fact that71% of Florida voters support a texting while driving ban.
