Experienced Tampa Amputation Law Firm
What is Amputation?
An amputation is the removal of an injured or diseased body part resulting from a traumatic injury or as a planned, surgical procedure to prevent the spread of infection or disease. While rare, traumatic amputation of a limb -- partial or total -- creates an immediate risk of death due to blood loss. Further, the medical procedures necessary to save the trauma victim’s life and provide functional ability are extremely costly. According to the American Diabetic Association, a typical prosthetic limb costs between $10,000 and $50,000. These costs do not include hospitalization or medical, nursing and psychological care and treatment which are routinely necessary.
An amputation is a painful, psychologically-traumatic injury which frequently reduces quality of life and affects entire families. Traumatic amputations in the U.S. are fairly rare injuries, experienced by only 1 in 20,000 people annually. In those instances, the loss of limb is usually immediate. In some cases, however, an amputation may occur several days after the initial trauma, as a result of medical complications. The most common causes of traumatic amputations are as follows:
Amputation due to personal injury/traffic accidents (car accidents, motorcycle accidents, bicycle accidents, etc.)
Amputation due to personal injury/workplace accidents (equipment, instruments, cylinders, chain saws, press machines, meat machines, wood machines, etc.)
Amputation due to personal injury/agricultural accidents (harvesting machinery, mowing equipment, etc.)
Amputations due to personal injury/electrocution or electric shock
Amputation due to personal injury from explosives/fireworks, guns and weapons
Amputation due to personal injury from rope accidents (violent rupture of ship rope or industry wire rope)
Amputation due to personal injury from ring traction or a de-gloving injury
Amputation due to personal injury from door closure accidents (garage doors, building doors, car doors, etc.)
